Isla de Mallorca

Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera) and has an area of around 3 600 square km, 110 km SW-NE and 70 km wide. There are two mountain ranges on the island, one in the south-east and one in the north-west with the highest peak Puig Major (1445m). Mallorca has a temperate subtropical climate with short, mild winters and long hot summers. There are around 1 million inhabitants, of which 450 000 live in Palma, the capital. After Palma the next largest towns are Manacor, Inca, Llucmayor and Sóller.

There are two languages spoken on the island - Castellano (called Spanish outside Spain) and Mallorquí which is the regional variant of the Catalan language. Both languages are used and the same things or places are therefore called differently which can seem somewhat confusing. For example street is called “calle” in Castellano and “carrer” in Mallorquí, and “cerrado” means closed in Castellano and “tancat” means the same in Mallorquí.

Mallorca´s produce includes wine, olives, oranges and almonds. However tourism has been Mallorca’s main income since the 1960’s. In the beginning of the 1900's Mallorca had around 30 000 visitors a year, in 1950 it was 100 000. By 1966 it reached one million visitors, more than six million in 1998 and today around 15 million visit the island.

Even though Mallorca is a fairly small island it is incredibly variable and offers many different landscapes. Here you can enjoy the cosmopolitan pulse with many cafés and restaurants (anything from tapas to top restaurants) and have lots of fun at all the bars and nightclubs. There is great shopping especially in Palma which can be combined with a walk around the city to enjoy the historical architecture. Or you can just relax on one of the many beaches around the island. Most of them are long and well visited but you can also find small coves and private places. Many come here for the outdoors - diving, bicycle training, hiking or for golfing at one of the 19 golf courses - or to enjoy the nature and tranquillity while staying at a finca in the countryside. Mallorca is also a very popular choice for overseas destination weddings, stag and hen nights, private celebrations, galas, incentives and corporate events and offers some amazing venues for these special occasions.
