The Torshell introduces a sense of stability to any gathering. the structural shape integrates sequences of timber beams rotating effortlessly to form a rigid shell. their aerodynamic shape makes them stable even in hurricane force winds. they are assembled manually and can be installed on any natural ground with up to 5% inclination, or on a leveled deck. the cupola is self supporting, but depending on the wind forecast and level of covering, might require to be held down by ballast or retrievable earth anchors.
Cupola Spaces go beyond the typical improvisations of the plan B, allowing events to unfold as scripted despite changes in the weather. there are three options for covering the shell, each producing different qualities and allowing the event to adapt to changing scenarios.
Framing
If the weather is perfect and the guests would like to eat under the sky or immersed in the landscape, then the timber cupola articulates a delicate lightweight space frame for the event, allowing decoration, the sound and the lighting to be suspended from it.
Transparent
If rain is forecast, or excessive dew or wind, then a transparent film can be stretched over the timber frame to protect the guests without losing the immersive relationship with the surroundings.
Shade
Daytime events can be protected from the sun by a translucent ochre membrane with a lacquer finish that includes UV protection and a fabric texture. . it is tensioned across the frame, generating double curvature surfaces in each rhombus, and brings an organic feel to the shell. The ochre membrane is translucent, and produces a tone of light that makes skin glow. in summer, the shade cover together with the cross ventilation of the space produces an ideal environment even on the hottest days.
The different covers can be exchanged in under an hour, allowing the qualities of the spaces to evolve with the rhythm of the event.
The Torshell comes in one modular size of 125m2, however for larger events, a series of Torshells can be organised in different combinations that adapt to the geometries and space restrictions of Mallorcan fincas. Linking panels can integrate cupolas into one continuous space, either end to end, side by side, or triaxially. Each Torshell can be themed individually, to facilitate customised attention and timeline planning.
