Geodesic Frame
The rigid geodesic structure is assembled from an original system of precise aluminium components, producing a maximally efficient structure that weighs only 550kg. this structure can be deployed without any covers, forming a delicate frame for activities that seek immersion in the Mallorcan landscape. the frame can resist 200kg on each of its hubs making it a perfect frame for any vertical performances such as tissue or trapeze. it is also ideal for suspending sound equipment, lighting, or bespoke objects from.
Cover Options
The cover is organized in three separate panels that can be independently adapted. the central panel has a surface of 180m2 and is fabricated from a white technical membrane with a lacquer finish. it is tensioned across the aluminium frame, generating a luminous surface that produces a generous shadow. the two side panels measure 26m2 each and are symmetrical. they can be fabricated from the same white membrane, or from transparent film to establish continuity with the surrounding context.
The default organization for summer events is to leave the two side panels open and allow the free flow of air through the space. the shadow produced by the central panel completely covers the interior floor area, generating a fresh and balanced space that is contained but also continuous with the surroundings.
If the site or the program requires more privacy then the back panel can be installed to increase the sense of enclosure or decrease the air movement through the dome. installing the front panel produces a fully controlled interior environment, allowing the use of air conditioning or heating depending on the season. the front panel can be transparent to establish a connection with the surroundings, or it can be white to generate a stronger sense of containment within the abstract geometry of the dome.
Entrance
The front panel has zipped doors that allow individual entrances, or alternatively the entire lower section of the panel can be raise to produce a 6m wide portico that promotes ventilation. the back panel can be organized in a similar way establishing two ample entrances if required. alternatively the back entrance allows caterers to service an event discreetly.
Floor Surface
The Lunadome require a fairly even and ideally horizontal surface, although small inclinations up to 5% can be accommodated. the Lunadome can be directly placed on natural surfaces such as sand or grass for an organic and integrated feel. alternatively a fabric surface such as jute or woven carpet can be installed. a solid timber floor system can also be installed for formal events. this floor can be continued an additional 3.8m beyond the front panel to configure a deck that acts as an alternative space for reception and conversation beyond the centrifugal space of the dome.
Canopy
The front of the dome can be complemented by a canopy that generates a soft shaded threshold and an interaction with the surroundings. the default canopy is made from white membrane, but customized canopies can be fabricated for your event. the canopy measures 26m2 and can accommodate up to 50 people. the canopy works particularly well with the transparent front panel as it avoids the entrance of direct solar radiation into the interior of the dome. A second canopy can be implemented at the back panel to generate a service space for caterers.
Ballast
Given its lightness, the lunadome must be anchored to avoid ensure stability in high winds. the geodesic sphere is sectioned where it meets the ground, generating a series of 12 feet that are either bolted to existing concrete slabs, or attached to earth anchoring systems, transmitting all of the dynamic wind loading safely to the ground. if anchoring is not permitted then water ballast must be deployed. one alternative is membrane ballast bags that flow around the outside of the dome generating a water sofa that can be enjoyed by guests. a second alternative is a series of nine 1m3 water tanks.
Code Compliance
The lunadome is deployable, self-supporting, and does not require a foundation system. their assembly or disassembly takes only one day, and they are classified as temporary bodies similar to pergolas, and exempt from planning permits. however, it is the responsibility of each client to make the respective checks on local regulations. structurally they are designed to meet all the requirements of the European standard EN13814, specifically in terms of stability under wind loads. they are fixed to the ground by ballast or with a removable anchor system that undergoes a load test. the membranes are fire retardant B1, with anti UV finishes, generating a safe and healthy shade.
Sizes
The LUNADOME comes in one standard 115m2 size. however for larger events, a series can be organized along an axis and connected, generating a continuous space with individualized moments. large events organized into separate clusters facilitate customized attention and timeline planning.
